Gargano

Gargano, also called "Spur of Italy", has a calcareous surface. The southern part is characterized by rocks overlooking the sea, sea caves carved over the centuries by the sea and shaped by the winds. Boasts one of the most beautiful coasts of Italy.

The northern part, however, is formed mainly by hills, rich in typical vegetation of the area: juniper, rosemary, Aleppo pines and oaks. Characterized by Lesina and Varano lakes, it is a stopping place for migratory birds.

In the last years many areas of Gargano are part of the National Park of Gargano. Foresta Umbra, so named because shaded by tall pines, oaks and holm-oaks, it boasts the presence of a species of orchid that flourishes only in this area.

The Park is characterized by lush vegetation, wood and forests, some of whom are impenetrable. In addition to a rich flora in the park there are many species of animals such as deer, mouflon (endangered species) and wild boar.

Tremiti Islands (San Domino, San Nicola, Capraia, Cretaccio and Pianosa) are part of the National Park, and, since 1989 they have become Marine Nature Reserve.
